I probably would've done the same and responded simply with "Thank you". There's really no point in belaboring his nit-pickiness in any way.
Sorry to be unoriginal, but I agree with Kelley and Gil. Sometimes its more important knowing what not to say, and in this case anything you said would have only lead to more "icky" conversation.
