It seems to me that no matter what Vic does, he's really stuck between the proverbial "rock and a hard place"......

I would have done everything possible to create my own environment, and not conform to the average corporate zombie, which is what Vic essentially did.

It's certainly a difficult situation, but it was evident from the outset of the story that Vic wasn't happy in his job. Why stay in a job that you're THAT unhappy doing?? I understand the need to keep money coming in to support your family, but come on!!

I completely agree with Anthony that becoming the corporate zombie and maintaining the status quo is not the answer here. Either Vic needs to do some Straight Talk with a whole bunch of people, or he needs to start looking for another job...

Seems to me that VIC suffers from a lack of integrity. He avoids work at all costs with excuses and lies, and ultimately has put himself into a situation where he is faced with the ultimate challenge to his integrity...and fails at this too.
Had he stepped up to the experiences he's been avoiding, he would have become a true leader, and would have the courage perhaps to confront his CEO's lack of integrity.
New nickname: Slic Vic.

Personally, I found it difficult to empathize with Vic. It seems his unhappiness at work is everyone's fault but his. Vic needs to transition accountability from the external world (coworkers, the company, the CEO) to his internal self (attitude, behaviors, expectations). Happiness, whether at work or elsewhere, is a conscious choice just as much as misery is!

Vic chose to redefine Cornflakes at work. At home, when asked to pass the Cornflakes, either by his child or wife, he does so without any reservations. But at work, when asked by Frederick, a co-worker which Vic states is not his boss, to do a 7064-A report (a.k.a. Cornflakes) he doesn’t pass the Cornflakes. He may have an inferiority complex. He thinks of excuses to avoid working on the report if Frederick happens to follow up. Vic also envies his wife who works at home and defines Cornflakes as Cornflakes. The bottom line… Vic should either get a new job or go into business for himself.

I disagree with Vic’s choices. Taking the attitude of “I am the victim or product of my environment” is not a winning strategy. Yet, if Vic had made different choices and took steps towards becoming the change that he seeks, cornflakes would become cornflakes again.
